I just got the DVD of Eat Drink Man Woman from Overstock.com. (Fast service!) In the extras, they interviewed Ang Lee and James Schamus; the latter claimed that when he tried to write about the characters as if they were Chinese, Lee was greatly dissatisfied, so he treated them as if they were Jewish. So it's really a movie about a Jewish family!
