Hmm. On the one hand, the
Economist cited research that concluded that the chance of a child dying within a month of birth doubled if the child's paternal grandmother was alive. On the other, the
NYT cites other research that showed the presence of a maternal grandmother cut toddlers' chances of dying in half. Sheesh. I'm lucky to be alive. My maternal grandmother died when I was two.
