Illinois high school students could be required to perform volunteer work in their communities in order to graduate and devote more class time to physical education under ideas floated Thursday by Gov. Blagojevich.
Community service seems a little like affirmative action in
college to me--too much social tinkering rather than education. And there are a lot of things that people ought to know, like how to handle their finances, that they aren't generally taught in school.
